Wine Season – Tips and Luxury Wine Grottos

The holidays are upon us. It’s the season of cooler weather, countless parties, and festive gatherings with friends and family. For many, it’s the time to stock up on wines to pair with holiday meals, as well as select a few bottles as hostess gifts. To help you prepare, we sat down with Austin Portfolio Real Estate Agent Ronda Prothro, who owns the boutique winery Prothro Family Wines in the Napa Valley.

“The holiday season is the perfect time for exceptional, big wines,” Prothro says.

As a hostess gift, she suggests selecting a wine you enjoy.

“Giving wine is like an endorsement,” Prothro says. “The bottle says a lot about you, so make sure it’s something you’ve already had, something you like, and is something you can discuss. It is always nice to have a story about your experience with the wine and why you think it is special.”

For pairing wine with a meal, Prothro says that it all depends on the main course. Since roasts and lamb are popular during the holidays, the wine selection is a bit different than other seasons.

“With these meals, you can go with bigger, more complex wines,” Prothro says. “Richness and bold structure helps preserve the balance you need between the food and wine.”

Wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Burgundy, Pinot Noir, and Rhone are all great choices for roasts. Lighter dishes such as goose, duck, fish and chicken pair well with Chardonnay or Pinot Noir. Parties with appetizers and hors d’oeuvres require more versatile wines like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, or Pinot Noir because they pair broadly with many different foods.

“In the end, though, drink what you like,” Prothro says. “Life is about the experiences you have and the stories you tell. When you pull a cork and drink some wine around the table with friends and family, you’re not just having a glass of wine; you’re sharing a moment, strengthening a relationship, and creating an experience that will lead to your own story.”

Once the perfect holiday wines are selected, they must be stored. Any wine enthusiast, whether you own just a few bottles or a few hundred, would love storing their collection in the wine cellars of these spectacular homes offered by Austin Portfolio Real Estate agents.
