7 Local Made Spirits to Beat the Heat this Summer

Summer is all about chilling and unwinding but it isn’t always easy to “chill” here in Texas. With the sun beating down, nothing is better than sipping refreshing cocktails to relax and cool off. And with Austin and the surrounding areas being home to nearly a dozen distilleries, with new ones popping up frequently, you don’t have to go far to find a local-made spirit to help tame the scorching heat.

Producing great vodka with nothing but premium juices, essential oils, natural sweeteners and local honey, Deep Eddy Vodka is handcrafted in the Texas distillery by a team serious about crafting a great spirit.

  • 1 part Deep Eddy Ruby Red Vodka
  • 2 parts club soda
  • Lime garnish
  • 2 oz Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka
  • Top with sparkling water

Desert Door Texas Sotol is a distilled spirit from wild-harvested sotol plants. Hand-crafted in Driftwood, the clean and fresh flavor comes from only three ingredients – wild sotol, organic yeast, and purified natural Texas water.

  • 1.5 oz Desert Door Original Sotol
  • 0.5 oz Fresh Lime Juice
  • 0.5 Agave Nectar
  • Blueberries
  • Watermelon
  • Sparkling Water

Directions: Muddle watermelon cube and mint. Add sotol, lime juice, agave, and ice to shaker. Shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Serve in a glass with salted rim, garnished with blueberries. Top with sparkling water.

  • 2 oz Desert Door Original Sotol
  • 5 oz Roasted Tomatillo Salsa
  • 1 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 2 Dashes of Worcestershire
  • 2 Serrano Slices
  • 1 oz Fresh Lime Juice

Directions: Combine all ingredients into tin shaker. Muddle Serrano. Dry shake (no ice). Strain into pint glass. Add fresh ice. Garnish with fresh tomatillo, red jalapeño, and fresh crushed black pepper or chili powder over top.

Known as the perfect anytime tequila, this spirit was crafted during a trip to Jalisco, Mexico. When it was brought back to Austin, it won Double Gold and Best in Show at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

  • 8 oz Tequila 512 Reposado
  • 1 (12 oz) can frozen limeade concentrate
  • 12 oz water
  • 1 lime, thinly sliced
  • 24 oz lager or pilsner, chilled

Optional: kosher salt for rimming glasses

Directions: In a large pitcher, combine limeade concentrate, tequila, and water. Stir until limeade is dissolved. Chill if desired, up top 6 hours, or proceed immediately to next step. Just prior to serving, fill pitcher with ice, lime slices, and beer. Serve in salt-rimmed glasses if desired.

Produced in Texas’s oldest legal distillery, this spirit was created in the early 90’s and is still made in batches using old-fashioned pot stills and corn-base. They even taste-test every batch.

  • 1.5 oz Tito’s Handmade Vodka
  • 5 oz root beer
  • 1 scoop vanilla ice cream

Directions: Pour Tito’s Handmade Vodka into chilled mug. Top with root beer, add a scoop of ice cream and enjoy!

  • 1.5 oz Tito’s Handmade Vodka
  • 4 oz fresh squeeze orange juice
  • 1 oz cranberry juice
  • Orange wheel

Directions: Add ice to serving glass and build cocktail by adding ingredients in order listed. Garnish with an orange wheel and serve.
