5 Questions with David Haynes

With a passion for real estate that was initially ignited after he began investing, renovating and flipping homes in Houston, Austin Portfolio Real Estate agent David Haynes relocated to our vibrant city in 2003, began his real estate career and has never looked back. Now, David specializes in everything residential from multi-million dollar lakefront estates to high-end or mid-range homes and condos.

Regardless of price point, David is focused on treating every client and transaction with the utmost respect, professionalism and integrity. We sat down with him to find out more about how his experience, background and passion allow him to do just that.

How has your background in Oil and Gas helped you and your clients in real estate?

Serving clients from all over the world in my international oil and gas career taught me how to relate to and exceed the expectations of a diverse customer base from local and foreign cultures and backgrounds…just like my clients today in the Vibrant city of Austin. Austin’s tech and startup communities attract the best and brightest from literally all over the world. I take special pride in being well prepared to identify their specific goals and particular needs; whether it be a family with special private school needs, a recently relocated CEO or young first time home buyers that want Central Core lifestyles. Everyone has something special they LOVE about Austin and it’s my job to help them embrace it with their surroundings.

With shows like the Property Brothers, Flip or Flop, and Fixer Uppers, people think they understand renovating and flipping homes. Since you did that in Houston, tell us about your experience and how it’s different from what’s seen on HGTV.

I would say the biggest difference between those tv shows and real life is when you are investing real money and expecting good results you have to have a plan and a vision and stay true to it. No one from Waco is going to swoop in and save you! Pick a budget and only waiver from it if you KNOW it will pay off. And don’t be afraid to take design risks. Buyers love special details that set your flip property apart from the typical selections found in MLS, whether it be a unique back splash or a funky floor pattern that really gives them bragging rights when they envision entertaining guests in their new home that you hope to sell them.


You work a lot with new construction. Why is it a good idea to have an agent during a new build?

New construction homes can lull buyers into a sense of complacency. They assume everything the builder tells them is true and trustworthy. Don’t let that happen! Most TRUE custom home builders take the time to make sure every detail is perfect before closing, but not all can be counted on to do this. I make sure my clients are informed from start of construction to the final walk through and closing so there are no surprises and screw-ups along the way!

What do you enjoy outside of Real Estate?

I enjoy family time with my son who attends Hill Country MS in Eanes ISD. Eanes ISD is a vibrant, top-rated public school system in West Central Austin, famous all over Texas for its unsurpassed scholastic achievement. I am active in supporting the Cross Country team and the band, and raising funds for the Eanes Education Foundation ( EEF).

I spend time every week working outside in my yard, working out in the crossfit community and, of course, walking and biking the Lady Bird Lake Trail.

We know you are actively involved with Just Imagine It charity. Tell us a little about that organization and what you do.

Just Imagine It is an organization dedicated to raising funds and brightening the lives of children admitted to hospitals for long-term care. With a mission to provide a positive atmosphere of hope, joy and excitement for some of the most gravely ill children in our city, we design special surroundings for them. We want to make their hospital rooms an oasis in the middle of what can be a stressful and challenging situation for the child and their family because we believe that a happy patient is a healing patient.
