5 Questions with Chris King

From his childhood up until the present day, Chris King has not gotten Real Estate off of his mind. After a corporate finance career, he finally followed his heart and transitioned into the world of real estate a few years ago. Today, Chris specializes in the greater Austin area assisting both buyers and sellers.  Educating clients throughout the entire process is something he is known for; which also promotes a smooth transaction for everyone involved. We caught up with Chris to find out more about his background, what it was about the industry that first piqued his interest and why he recently joined Austin Portfolio Real Estate.

When working with buyers and sellers, you make it a priority to educate your clients throughout the transaction. Why is this important to you and how do you think it benefits the client even after closing?

I’ve had the pleasure of working with many first time buyers and sellers, and for most of them, the first thing I notice is a level of stress and anxiety – before any kind of excitement. Most of them are overwhelmed by the thought of such a large transaction and get lost in all of the details – losing focus on what is important in the moment.

That is why I give clients a high-level overview of the process first and foremost so that they are aware of what to expect during each step. Real Estate involves a mentality of “hurry up and wait” so making clients comfortable is something I’m always looking to do. It leads to better questions from clients, a better perspective on what’s happening, and ultimately a much smoother deal on their end and mine. Clients remember the time that we took together and are appreciative after closing when they have a chance to look back on the process. Knowing they learned something is rewarding to me and helps them be better prepared the next time they need to make a move.

You recently joined Austin Portfolio Real Estate. We’re excited to have you as part of the team! What made you want to be part of this group of Austin real estate agents?

I  am so excited to be here! Joining APRE has been such a great transition in my career, and I have felt so supported in the process. Every day, I am surrounded by colleagues that are top industry performers, and also people I consider as friends. Being a Luxury extension of Keller Williams has so many benefits to help a growing business such as mine. Consistent Labs with Gary Keller, networking opportunities, and an international presence to name just a few!

Tell us more about what lead you to a career in real estate.

I have always loved real estate – it’s in my blood. I remember watching Million Dollar Listing when it first came out and identifying with the business immediately. Throughout the end of high school and college, I was able to align myself with a top team in my hometown. I worked as an office assistant and got a real taste of what it was like to be in the industry.

As I was closing out my education in Finance at Ohio University, I was also looking for an adventure. I was recruited to Dell in 2011 and moved to Austin the following summer. Once I arrived, I began to think about how I could get into real estate – flipping, investing, or selling on the side all came to mind. As time passed in my demanding Corporate Finance career, which was full of constant change, international travel and a life that was developing here in Austin, it made it difficult to make a jump for a long time. That opportunity finally came a few years ago and I haven’t looked back since.

I’m so grateful for my time at Dell, the relationships I made, and the experiences I had. They all have helped me in developing myself further and in creating a successful business mode1.

Outside of real estate, what are some of your favorite things to do and places to go in Austin?

Austin is such a great place to live, and I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Often when I talk with friends from my hometown of Aurora, Ohio, they ask if Austin is my “forever home.” As I respond “of course,” I always think of the way I feel when I have traveled somewhere and see the Austin skyline as we fly back into Bergstrom. It’s a feeling of comfort, of familiarity, and excitement for what’s to come. Whether I have just been on an adventure in Asia or Europe, or if I am just returning from a trip a few states away, I always feel excited to be back home.

My favorite thing to do in Austin is to spend time with friends and check out all of the new hip restaurants, cocktail bars, and live music events. At this point, it’s hard to keep up with all of them – but I’ll keep trying! The great thing about this city is how small it really is. After the better part of a decade here, I tend to always run into friendly and familiar faces wherever I go when I am out.

Luckily to offset all of those social activities, I love being outside and being active, which means there are tons of things for me to do! Living downtown, running on the trail is a place you’ll find me a few times a week. I also enjoy going for bike rides all over the city, everywhere from 360 to Walter E. Long.

We understand you have a passion for competing in triathlons. Tell us more about your competition history and training for each event.

As a child, I competed in Triathlon’s for many years. It was fun, it wasn’t too serious, and it was rewarding. In my adulthood, I have learned that it is so important to have goals that you are working towards. After I got into the business, my mentor and leader at the time was training for an Ironman and I immediately asked how I could get into his program. It’s been a lot of fun challenging myself to do things I never thought possible, which is how I approach my professional career as well. I finished out my season in 2018 by completing a Half-Ironman, and am looking at my schedule to plan out a few races for this year.
