Taking down holiday decor may not bring the same joy as putting it up, but a little organization now can make next year’s decorating effortless. Jamie from Tidy Crescent Co. understands how overwhelming post-holiday cleanup can feel, so she’s sharing a few simple tips to keep your seasonal decor neat, tidy, and ready for next year.
Follow her tips below to pack away your decorations and kick off an organized New Year.
How do you approach taking down holiday décor without feeling overwhelmed?
"I turn on an audiobook, podcast, or playlist and take it one space at a time. If I plan on reusing a similar setup next year, I pack things away by zone so everything that was displayed together gets stored together and is ready for next year."
What’s the biggest mistake people make when putting away holiday decorations?
"Stuffing everything into big bins with no rhyme or reason. To save yourself from digging through messy bins and dragging extra heavy ones around next year, invest in different size bins instead of forcing random things to fit together. Consider your storage space and sizes of your décor, then group things by category or by the space it’s used in."
Are there any tools, products, or storage solutions you swear by for keeping décor organized?
"Clear bins are my go-to. The red and green ones are festive, but being able to see what’s inside makes decorating so much easier. Even with clear bins, always label! They aren’t just for finding things, but for remembering what goes where when you’re packing up. And ornament organizers are a must for keeping fragile pieces safe and organized!"
Are there tricks to make next year’s decorating process easier?
"If you like this year’s set up, take photos before you start taking things down so you can quickly replicate it next year. Label everything (you truly can’t overdo it), and group decor in a way that makes sense to you whether that’s by type, color, or the space it’s used in."
Do you wait until a certain date to take down decorations, or do you do it as soon as the holidays are over?
"We usually let them stay up through New Year’s and sometimes a week or two after, depending on what’s going on. I think you should do what feels right! If you’re ready by December 26th, go for it. If you want to enjoy them a little longer, there’s no rush. Honestly, I don’t think the judging starts until February."
How do you balance getting your home back in order with still enjoying the holiday spirit?
"I wait until after New Year’s, then take my time. There’s no need to rush the reset! Enjoy the season, and let the house catch up when life slows down again."
What’s one tip you wish everyone knew about storing holiday decor?
"Take photos of your favorite arrangements from this year before you take anything down. It’s an easy reference for next year and makes redecorating so much smoother! There’s no need to reinvent the wheel every holiday season. Be sure to add the photos to an album on your phone so they are easy to find next year!"
