In 1947, Osceola Heard Davenport, a widow of a Rio Grande Valley oilman, purchased nearly 1,300 acres near Lake Austin for $40,000 in cash with plans to start a cattle ranch. She built a modest stone ranch house and grazed cattle on 200 acres, but dense vegetation made it difficult to graze on the remaining land.
Her attempts to clear large tracts of trees and brush led to several wildfires, including a major blaze in 1961 that ultimately scorched 4,000 acres.
In 1967, while still a student at the University of Texas at Austin,
Corbin J. Robertson Jr., an All-American linebacker and heir to oil magnate
Hugh Roy Cullen, purchased the ranch alongside other family members.
The property was envisioned as both a long-term investment and a weekend retreat.
In the late 1970s, the Robertson family decided to develop the land after plans for the Loop 360 Bridge were announced, making the area highly desirable for luxury homebuilders. The family established a development company and set about creating an upscale, master-planned community known as Davenport Ranch.
