Soulful Spaces: Designing Homes That Tell Your Story with Audrey Scheck Design

ree

Have you ever walked into your most stylish friend’s home and felt like every detail was thoughtfully considered? From the art on the walls to the way the books are stacked, it all feels so intentional, like the space is a seamless extension of their *effortlessly chic* personality and story. You might wonder,

How did they pull this off? Spoiler: it’s not just a click-and-ship moment from a big-box brand. (Though if that’s your path, we get it, we just might be able to tell.)

Luckily, Audrey Scheck, principal designer at Audrey Scheck Design, is here to break it all down. She’s sharing how to craft a home that feels elevated, curated, and deeply personal while also capturing the charm and character that make Austin homes so unique.

Everybody is different and every home is different. “Honoring the home's heritage and original architecture is incredibly important to us, so we aim to blend the existing character with thoughtful updates that feel organic and intentional,”

says Scheck. Before you rush to cover up or gut something that gives your home character, pause. With the right approach, it might be the very feature that sets your space apart and you might just surprise yourself.

Texas homes have characteristics that are architecturally distinct, and highlighting them creates truly unique design. But not just the architecture that is distinct and worth highlighting, but also the landscape, “We are heavily inspired by the beautiful nature in the Texas Hill Country like the sunsets, bodies of water, gorgeous views, foliage, and wildflowers,” says Scheck. “We lean into these natural, organic color palettes inspired by the land around us. This influence naturally comes through in the colors and textures we use in our designs.”

Looking internally can be just as eye opening when discovering your unique style. “We thoughtfully review inspiration and begin sourcing pieces that align with what the client is drawn to,” Scheck continues. “This process is especially valuable for clients who may not know how to express their vision, helping us bring their dream home to life in a way that feels effortless and truly personal."

The last thing you want after a long day is to sink into the couch and feel like you’re lounging in a staged showroom instead of your own home. “Many of our clients want to incorporate special elements into their home that carry personal history or meaning, whether it’s an inherited piece of furniture, a collection of antiques, or treasures gathered from their travels. We often design around these meaningful items, thoughtfully integrating them into the overall aesthetic in a way that feels intentional and curated. We’re always mindful of honoring what matters most to our clients, ensuring that the spaces we create not only reflect their style but also tell their story,” says Scheck.  It might be time to stop thinking of those inherited items as clutter collecting dust and start seeing them as meaningful pieces with potential.

Don’t worry honoring the past doesn’t mean your home has to feel like a time capsule. Think less lace doilies and drip coffee, more heirloom charm reimagined with intention and a modern point of view. "We focus on making timeless design decisions for the areas that take up the most visual space, such as the wall color in the primary bedroom or the flooring throughout the home. For these foundational elements, we tend to source classic, enduring materials that have stood the test of time. As the design decisions become more detailed, like lighting, textiles, or hardware, we start to have more fun and bring in personality. With a timeless foundation in place, it becomes easier to layer in fresh, relevant ideas through accents like artwork, soft furnishings, and decorative fixtures, creating a balanced and cohesive look."

Because great design isn’t
